K-5 Science Endorsement

(150 Contact Hours, 15 PLUs, Certification Add-on)
Middle Georgia RESA GaPSC approved K-5 Science Endorsement for a total of 15 PLUs.  MG RESA offers the three courses and the Authentic Residency to earn a K-5 Science Endorsement. This program endeavors to abide by and provide expertise in accordance with PSC rule 505-3-.93 K-5 SCIENCE ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM .
  
Candidate admission to the MGRESA Endorsement Program requires the following:
 
1. A valid, level 4 or higher Induction, Professional, Advanced Professional, or Lead Professional teaching certificate in one of the following fields:
 
(i) Early Childhood Education (P-5); (ii) Middle Grades Science (4-8); (iii) Special Education General Curriculum/Early Childhood Education (P-5); or (iv) The following certificates combined with a core academic content concentration in Science: (I) Special Education General Curriculum (P-12); (II) Special Education Adapted Curriculum (P-12); (III) Special Education Behavior Disorders (P-12); (IV) Special Education Learning Disabilities (P-12); (V) Special Education Deaf Education (P-12); (VI) Special Education Physical and Health Disabilities (P-12); (VII) Special Education Visual Impairment (P-12); or (VIII) Gifted Certificate (P-12)
 
2. A minimum of one year of teaching experience.
 
This is a job-embedded program. Candidates must practice skills with students.
 
Candidates must register online under Online Registration for each course of the K-5 Science Endorsement and follow the link to print the application for system approval.

Additional Requirements: 

      Candidate must be teaching Science in grades K-5
      Candidate must hold a certificate in at least one of the following areas:

  • Early Childhood Education (P-5)
  • Middle Grades Science (4-8)
  • Special Education General Curriculum/Early Childhood Education (P-5)
  • A Special Education Field (which may include gifted education) with a core content concentration in Science.

 Pre-Requisite for all three courses:

The target audience for this course is elementary teachers who desire to increase their professional practice and content knowledge of science within the K-5 setting.

Course Descriptions

The Endorsement is divided into three courses consisting of 5 PLUs each and must be taken in sequence.  Completion of the three courses is required in order to add the K-5 Science endorsement to an existing level 4 professional teaching certificate or higher.

Course 1: Teaching Physical Science  

This course is one of three courses of the K-5 Science Endorsement. The course focuses on content knowledge, science inquiry, and strategies for teaching physical science. The course will provide an online instructional and research opportunity in the organization of physical science with a focus on K-5 science Georgia Performance Standards.

The online approach will model the same process of scientific inquiry as a regular classroom structure including reading, research, discussion, and other interactive experiences. The course provides effective teaching methodologies, strategies, development and implementation of inquiry lessons that can be used when teaching physical science.

Course 2: Teaching Earth Systems Science  

This course is the second of three courses of the K-5 Science Endorsement. The course focuses on content knowledge, science inquiry, and strategies for teaching Earth Systems Science. This will provide online instructional and research opportunity in the organization of Earth Systems Science with a focus on K-5 science Georgia Performance Standards. The online approach will model the same process of scientific inquiry as a regular classroom structure including reading, research, discussion, and other interactive experiences. The course provides effective teaching methodologies, strategies, development and implementation of inquiry lessons that can be used when teaching Earth Systems Science. 

Course 3: Teaching of Life Science 

This course is one of three courses of the K-5 Science Endorsement. The course focuses on content knowledge, science inquiry, and strategies for teaching life science. The course will provide an online instructional and research opportunity in the organization of life science with a focus on K-5 science Georgia Performance Standards. The online approach will model the same process of scientific inquiry as a regular classroom structure including reading, research, discussion, and other interactive experiences. The course provides effective teaching methodologies, strategies, development and implementation of inquiry lessons that can be used when teaching life science.
